🟡 My Story📘 Part 1: Humble Beginnings - The Origins of my Business. In 1986, The teachers strike happened and it affected students up and down the country and especially students like me who was about to sit their GCE O levels. I ended up Passing a number of subjects but failing English language and Physics. The school itself was a State Comprehensive boys school, 2000 of us. My family decided to invest in a special retake college in Birmingham which paid dividends. Small classes, Outstanding teachers. My English Language and Physics Grades both Jumped respectively to B and A grades respectively. I also sat AO level Chemistry and Biology and obtained C in both.Armed with those grades, I ended up at King Henry VIII Private school to do my A levels. In 1988, My teacher at a school in Coventry suggested that I should set up a football club for the students in the 6th Form as they didn't have a football team. Not only did I single handedly manage to find a property developing establishment to sponsor the club with some funds to pay for kit and pitch fees, equipment , etc, I then advertised for players , had a number of trials for the students at my school and others, and very quickly learnt what it was like to be the treasurer, secretary, laundry man , the lot. I did it all on my own. That season, we lost nearly every game playing in the Men's league of the Coventry and Warwickshire Districts League, conceding nearly 80 goals.Irrespective of that, I know look back and reflect how someone at 18 Years of age managed to get 15 players every Saturday afternoons to pitches across Warwickshire.

📘 Part 2: YMCA London – The Real School of LifeAfter that 1 Year, I left Coventry and in a roundabout way, whilst studying for my ACCA , Accountancy exams in London, I found myself staying in an emergency accommodation as it was very last minute. This was 1990. I ended up in The Hornsey YMCA, London Borough of Haringey. This YMCA was not just any YMCA. It was described on one edition of the Sunday Tabloids as "the worst" for the type of people it was housing and the activities taking place there. This was a place that was regarded as a Halfway house for Prisoners who had just been released, homeless, hardened criminals, Drugs , etc and there I was as a student. On my first day, I was placed in a shared room, with a Heroin addict. The next morning, I found all my money had gone and so had he. I was moved immediately the next day to a Single room.Whilst I was studying at the YMCA, I funded my way through College by working as an Evening Security Guard and then managed to find work as an Accounts Clerk. In that Year, 1990, I also got to know the YMCA gym manager and most importantly, a chap called Leo. A hardened gangster from Tottenham who everyone was scared off and respected. Leo loved his football and was up early as an avid boxer, training and would join me at breakfast every morning in the YMCA restaurant. I would be there in my Security guard Uniform. Over the next few months, I organised football matches in the local park for residents of YMCA and from the local community. I told Leo how I had run a club in Coventry.Within a week, Leo had persuaded the GYM manager to provide some funds to set up the Hornsey YMCA football club. This is where I put to use everything I learnt in my first stint and was intent to make this team a success.A Year later, I found sponsorship from a local Pizza shop in Crouch End , entered the team into the Haringey & Districts Sunday League for the 1991 Season. Crouch End Dragons was borne. I Scouted, advertised, held trials and coached a team of mismatches. Individuals from the YMCA including some ex -convicts, from the local community , and even managed to find some exceptional 15 Year olds at a local school nearby. My real Journey started here, at Priory Park, Crouch End. To cut a long story short, Over 8 Years, I managed this team , gaining Promotion in successive years from Division 8 to Division 1. We won the Title in 1999.Little did I know that what I had learnt over those 8 Years in Football Management and the successes I had as a Manager led shaped my career to follow and Present day.

📘 Part 3: Football to TeachingIn 1994, I decided Accountancy wasn’t for me. I had managed to pass my Intermediary stage and decided to sacrifice the Final Year to do something I never thought about. In fact, It was some of my players and another manager in the League who interviewed me for his Newspaper that made me realise, I could become a PE teacher. This manager said to me that many of the other managers in the league often wondered how a Young man like me could manage "a bunch of misfits" so well and that I would do well to teach in schools. I learnt a lot during those football years, , scouting talent, Team fit , coaching a cross section of a diverse community, sharing Vision of glory, Tactical knowledge , getting a name for myself as someone who would go and watch other teams in the league, know players to watch in those teams, The art of poaching players in teams who were looking at relegation or maybe disbanding. Having the right contacts to know what was going on with these other teams. Not only was I managing for the short term, but taking a longer term perspective and most importantly how to keep a contented team without making major upheavals. In 1995, I attended University of Greenwich and embarked on a PE and Science teaching Degree. Having got my Degree in 1999, My teaching Journey began.

📘 Part 4: The Classroom Years - Bruce Lee and Kung Fu Gave me the Inner ConfidenceMy first teaching job was in Colchester, serving a school that was notoriously challenging and serving the largest estate in the UK at one point. What a baptism of fire that was. Loved every minute of it. I realised that I was made for the classroom.I concentrated more on teaching Science as that was very much a subject in demand and I very quickly loved studying the psychology and sociology of students. Their dynamics, interactions, what made them tick and in some cases not tick, the root of behavioural issues. What I found out very quickly was how the students loved to hear about my background, my story and responded to real life applications.I carried this forward over many years, fine tuning my art and relishing working with students who were deemed as "lost causes", across Brixton and Brent. In 2003, I obtained my First Head of department role in Luton. An incredible steep learning curve in learning to manage a defragmented team of teachers and Science technicians. This is where all my experiences in the footballing world came into play. Resolution conflicts. Over the subsequent Years to follow, I worked in other head of Department roles in schools that were deemed to be "inadequate" , Science departments deemed to be "failing" , putting into place action plans for improvement and getting the schools through "OFSTED". I seemed to be getting a name for myself and having completed a stint in Tottenham, I was "headhunted" to lead a team at a school in Mitcham.A school that had been tarnished on many occasions by "poor behaviour" that they had to endure many name changes. Police community officers at the gate. The Science Department was deemed "as Failing substantially" - Students were actually offered the Subject as an option as opposed to the fact it was compulsory. What followed was everything I had learnt on the football pitches of Haringey and Hackney, through the previous schools I had worked at, all coming together over a 5 Year improvement plan. To sum it up, GCSE Science was no longer an option. Every student had to be entered for it from the time I joined in 2012 and most importantly, results increased Year on Year from 7% A-C grades to 95% A-C grades.I look back now with pride the measures I put in place and how a team was built there from part-scratch who shared my vision. The recruitment of the teachers right down to motivating, inspiring and offering multiple pathways for students to succeed. I was awarded 2 "Outstanding Grades|" whilst I was there BUT that wasn’t the end.In 2012, I was "headhunted" again and whilst I was not looking to move, this was a challenge I had to say yes to.A Pupil referral unit in Hampshire. What an amazing experience as Head of Science, being part of an extended Senior Leadership team, the relationships built with staff and probably the most vulnerable and "difficult" in my entire time as a teacher , and seeing these students achieve incredible success against the odds. Prom nights said it all.

📘 Part 5: A Father's WordsIn 2014, I spoke to my father about the possibility of setting up my own Educational Recruitment business with a twist. The twist being that I deliver bespoke Behaviour Management training to the teachers and to follow that up in the schools. My dad loved it.His final words to me was “ do what I had to do when I was made redundant, I only knew Civil engineering BUT then I worked at Abbey Life, trained as a Life Assurance broker, completing all my exams and within 3 Years setting up my own Financial Services Business. Remember to do your research, who are the best recruitment agencies to learn your trade and then work a variety of sectors to apply what you have learnt and fine tune. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to break the system for what you believe in. Always aim for the Long term , Don’t chase the money!! Find People to work with who you have a mutual interest or likes and share experiences. That’s how you build relationships.”The number of cars, People who came to pay their respects lined the Crematorium to surrounding roads. I had not realised the impact my father had made through his business. Clients from all over the UK and the world turned up. It was all beginning to make sense. Those last words rang true in everything I have done to date in recruitment. From getting the best training at Hays within Accountancy and Finance sector, and then applying and fine tuning along the way within Engineering and the Tech Sector. The learning curve has been immense and I still thrive on the fine tuning.I have been fortunate also to have met some fantastic , experienced Recruiters who showed me other ways to compliment my Hays training. This culminated in 2022 when I was awarded by my then company as “The Consultant of the Year” and “Prankster of the Year”.It seems my sense of humour has not been lost through my Teaching or Football years. What made the tech recruitment role challenging was that it served the Dutch Market and whilst I was not a Tech expert or spoke Dutch, I learnt, fine tuned and adapted.
